Product Description
As passive components, CP-series PTC thermistors can be used for overcurrent protection and surge suppression. They feature contactless operation, zero noise, no sparking, automatic protection, self-resetting capability, and reusability, and they meet the safety performance requirements of the U.S. UL1434 standard.
Key Features and Advantages
• Positive Temperature Coefficient Effect: This is the most fundamental characteristic of PTC thermistors. Their resistance increases as the temperature rises, in contrast to NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors.
• Nonlinear stepwise characteristics (switching type): For the most common ceramic PTC thermistors, the resistance value does not change uniformly with temperature. Below a specific temperature—known as the Curie temperature or switching temperature—the resistance value is relatively low and stable. Once the temperature exceeds the Curie point, the resistance value increases dramatically by several orders of magnitude (ranging from 10³ to 10⁶ times), exhibiting a sharp, switch-like transition.
• Self-restoring function: This is the most prominent advantage of PTC thermistors. When an overcurrent or overheating condition occurs in a circuit, the PTC’s temperature rises due to its own heat generation or an increase in ambient temperature, causing its resistance to spike dramatically. As a result, the circuit current is limited to an extremely low and safe level—achieving self-limiting current flow and providing protective functionality. Once the fault is cleared and the temperature drops, the PTC automatically returns to its low-resistance state, allowing the circuit to resume normal operation without the need to replace the component. For this reason, it is often referred to as a “self-resetting fuse.”
• High Sensitivity and Wide Temperature Range: Its resistance temperature coefficient is significantly higher than that of metallic materials—up to 10 to 100 times or more—enabling it to detect even minute temperature changes. It operates over a broad temperature range; standard devices can cover temperatures from -55°C to 315°C, while certain models are designed to withstand even higher or lower temperatures.
• Small in size and robust in structure.
